The main function of the horse blanket is to keep the horse warm and dry. The weight of the blanket should be determined by several factors.

· Is the horse kept in a heated barn?
· Does your equine have a heavy coat or very little coat?
· Is your horse old or young?
· Is your horse turned out in the pasture?

The type of blanket that you need for your equine depends on the weather and what part of the country you live in. If your horse is outside and you live in a cold climate then you will need a heavier blanket. If you are in a warmer climate you will probably need a lighter weight blanket. Your blanket should fit into your horse's life and your budget. If you are buying a horse blanket for a young horse you should purchase a cheaper blanket because they will grow out of the blanket. When you have an older animal you may want a warmer blanket.
The newer blankets on the market today are generally weather proof. They resist rain and wind. The more modern blankets are also warmer than the older wool blankets. The surface next to the skin is smoother and more comfortable for the horse.
The horse blanket you use should fit correctly. If the blanket is too large it could be unsafe, such as it can slip to the side and trip the horse or the horse can be tripped by the straps hanging too low. The straps can also be torn off if the horse puts his foot into them. When the blanket is too small it can rub and chafe.
To determine the size of the blanket you measure from the middle of the chest around the side of the horse to the middle of his tail. The number of inches that you measure is the size of the blanket that you need. Most blankets run a little large so if it measures between sizes get the smaller size. If you are not sure ask the salesperson where you are buying the blanket. Some brands have large neck openings and don't fit narrowed shouldered horses.
Horse blankets need regular maintenance like your tack. Each equine should have their own blanket. They should be cleaned regularly. When storing your blanket for the summer it should be washed before putting it away then it will be ready for use when you need it again. Read the care instructions that come with the horse blanket.
Depending on your location and climate, a quality horse blanket can be an integral part of keeping your horse warm and dry.
